A baritone chordA long, long time ago, I can still remember how
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
that music used to make me smile.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
And I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance
Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D baritone chordD
and maybe they'd be happy for a while.
Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm
But February made me shiver, with every paper I'd deliver,
C baritone chordC G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC D baritone chordD
Bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D baritone chordD
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride,
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D baritone chordD G baritone chordG
But something touched me deep inside, the day, the music, died.

G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
So Bye - bye, Miss American Pie,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was dry,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
And them good ole' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye, singin'
Em baritone chordEm A7 baritone chordA7 Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
This'll be the day that I die, This'll be the day that I die.

G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
Did you write the book of love and do you have faith in God
above,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD D7 baritone chordD7
If the Bible tells you so?
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
Now do you believe in rock and roll,
Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
can music save your mortal soul and
Em baritone chordEm A7 baritone chordA7 D baritone chordD
Can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
Well, I know that you're in love with him,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
cause I saw you dancing in the gym.
C baritone chordC G baritone chordG A7 baritone chordA7 C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7
You both kicked off your shoes, man I dig those rhythm and blues.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
with a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
but I knew I was out of luck the day,the music died.

G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
I started singing...
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
Bye - bye, Miss American Pie,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was dry,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
Them good ole' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye, singin'
Em baritone chordEm A7 baritone chordA7 Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD D7 baritone chordD7
This'll be the day that I die, This'll be the day that I die.

G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
Now for ten years we've been on our own,
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
and moss grows fat on a rollin' stone,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD D7 baritone chordD7
but that's not how it used to be.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
When the jester sang for the King and Queen,
Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
in a coat he borrowed from James Dean,
Em baritone chordEm A7 baritone chordA7 D baritone chordD
and a voice that came from you and me.
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
Oh and while the King was looking down,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
the jester stole his thorny crown.
C baritone chordC G baritone chordG A7 baritone chordA7 C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7
the courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
And while Lenin read a book on Marx, the quartet practised in the park,
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
and we sang dirges in the dark the day, the music, died.

G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
We were singin'...
Helter-skelter in the summer swelter,
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
the birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD D7 baritone chordD7
eight miles high and fallin' fast.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
It landed foul on the grass, the players tried for a forward pass,
Em baritone chordEm A7 baritone chordA7 D baritone chordD
with the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
Now that halftime air was sweet perfume,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
while the sergeants played a marching tune,
C baritone chordC G baritone chordG A7 baritone chordA7 C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7
we all got up to dance, oh but we never got the chance,
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
`cause the players tried to take the field,
Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
the marching band refused to yield,
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
do you recall what was revealed, the day, the music, died.

G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
We started singin'...
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
Bye - bye, Miss American Pie,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was dry,

This'll be the day that I die, This'll be the day that I die.

G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
Oh, and there we were all in one place
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
A baritone chordA generation lost in space with no time left to start again.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC Em baritone chordEm A7 baritone chordA7 D baritone chordD
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick ‘cause fire is the devil’s only friend.
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
C baritone chordC G baritone chordG A7 baritone chordA7 C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7
No angel born in hell could break that Satan’s spell.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
And as the flames climbed high into the night
Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm
To light the sacrificial rite, I saw Satan laughing with delight,
C baritone chordC D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
The day the music died.

G baritone chordG D baritone chordD
He was singing

I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news,
Em baritone chordEm D baritone chordD
but she just smiled and turned away.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC
I went down to the sacred store where I’d heard the music years before,
Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D baritone chordD
but the man there said the music wouldn't play.
Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm
And in the streets the children screamed,
Em baritone chordEm Am baritone chordAm
the lovers cried and the poets dreamed,
C baritone chordC G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
but not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken.
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm D baritone chordD
And the three men I admire most, the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
G baritone chordG D baritone chordD Em baritone chordEm C baritone chordC D baritone chordD G baritone chordG
they caught the last train for the coast the day, the music, died.
D baritone chordD
And they were singin'....

Bye - bye, Miss American Pie,

drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was dry,

Bye - bye, Miss American Pie,

About this song: American Pie

"American Pie" is a folk rock song by singer-songwriter Don McLean. Recorded and released on the American Pie album in 1971, the single was a number-one U.S. hit for four weeks in 1972. A re-release in 1991 did not chart in the U.S., but reached number 12 in the UK. The song is an abstract story surrounding "The Day the Music Died" -- the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Giles Perry Richardson, Jr.).
