For the most part I usually do:
Dx DUDx *nc* DDUDUx *nc* Dx DUDx and then repeat.
(x= hit, *nc*= note change)
I've found that works for the main melody, but I could be completely wrong. But if all else fails downstrokes where you would do note changes sounds pretty nice. So, I'm sorry if that didn't help.
