# This is a tab of how I play it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZxXW4_UTPw

This intro is very simplified.

A||----0-4-0---0---0----|
E||--2-------2---0------|
C||---------------------
G||---------------------|

A||----0-4-0---0---0----|
E||--0-------0---2------|
C||---------------------|
G||---------------------|

# Then,

Am chordAm, C chordC, G chordG Em chordEm fingerpicked. On the Em chordEm, strum it once, then do:

A||--2s5-5-------------|
E||--3s5-5-------------|
C||--------------------|
G||--------------------|

^^Repeat that at least twice. Then go in to the singing part.

Am chordAm C chordC G chordG Em chordEm
Life it seems will fade away, drifting further every day.
Am chordAm C chordC G chordG Em chordEm
Getting lost within myself, nothing matters, no one else.
Am chordAm C chordC G chordG Em chordEm
I have lost the will to live, simply nothing more to give.
Am chordAm C chordC G chordG
There is nothing more for me. Need the end to set
E chordE
me free

Then there's the heavy instrumental. I do it like this.

# A chordA, C chordC, A chordA, D chordD, E chordE

# I use these shapes for D chordD and E chordE:

A||---5----7--------|
E||---5----8--------|
C||---6----9--------|
G||---7----9--------|

# Then A chordA, C chordC, A chordA, G chordG, F# chordF#, E chordE

Do the G chordG to F# chordF# then E chordE like this:

A||---2----1----2---|
E||---3----2----4---|
C||---2----1----4---|
G||---3----2----4---|

Repeat that instrumental twice. Then the next verse.

Am chordAm C chordC G chordG Em chordEm
Things not what they used to be, missing one inside of me.
Am chordAm C chordC G chordG Em chordEm
Deathly lost, this can't be real, cannot stand this hell I feel.
Am chordAm C chordC G chordG Em chordEm
Emptiness is filling me, to the point of agony.
Am chordAm C chordC G chordG
Growing darkness taking dawn, I was me, but
E chordE
now he's gone

Instrumental again. Repeat.

Then the bridge. I've simplified it very much:

D chordD F chordF
No one but me can save myself but it's too late
D chordD F chordF
Now I can't think, think why I should even try.
D chordD F chordF
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
D chordD F chordF
Death greats me warm, now I will just say goodbye.

# At this point, I just repeat the Am chordAm, C chordC, G chordG, Em chordEm fingerpicking part of the
# intro. I'm no Kirk Hammet.

# Hope you found this helpful.

About this song: Fade To Black

The first musical ballad released by the band. It was ranked as having the 24th best guitar solo ever by Guitar World magazine readers. It was written after almost all of their equipment, including a very rare amplifier, given to singer/rhythm guitarist James Hetfield by his mother just before she died, was stolen in Boston, MA, following a gig at the Channel Club on 14th January 1984. This event forced Metallica to borrow equipment from fellow tour band and friends, Anthrax, for the remainder of the tour.
