C Em
I walked across an empty land
Dm G
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
C Em
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Dm G
Sat by the river and it made me complete
C Em
Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
Dm G
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
C Em
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
Dm G
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin
C Em
I came across a fallen tree
Dm G
I felt the branches of it looking at me
C Em
Is this the place we used to love?
Dm G
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?
C Em
Oh simple thing, where have you gone?
Dm G
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on

i find it works better if you add an F in the verses between the Dm and G to line up with "back" or equivalent

[I fell in love with this song after I saw it on Glee and I just had to figure out how to play. Most
people use F instead of Dm but I think it sounds better with Dm. So for the first verse (I walked across),
second verse (I came across), and both bridges (Oh simple thing), I use the strum DUD-UUUDUDU but It works with most strums like DDUUDU-DDUUDU. And then the chorus (And if you have a minute), I use for Dm (DUDUD-UUDD), then C (DUDD), and G (DUDD). Good luck trying to figure it out, but mostly just experience with different strums- the one you're most comfortable with is usually the best one.]

About this song: Somewhere Only We Know
Contrary to popular belief, this song is most likely not about lovers. Tim Rice-Oxley has said that the 'somewhere only we know' can be a great variety of things, and when writing the song, left it to be ambiguous, though he has thought of it as a sort of escape, such as a good memory or a favorite place. Rice-Oxley told The Daily Mirror "It's about being able to draw strength from a place or experience you've shared with someone. I think its an idea a lot of people can relate to."
