Introduction:
One [C C]evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fire was burning,
Down the track came a hobo hikin',
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning.
I'm [F F]headed for a [C C]land that's [F F]far a[C C]way,
Be[F F]side the crystal [G7 G7]fountains,
So [C C]come with me, we'll go and see,
The Big Rock [G7 G7]Candy [C C]Mountains."
Verse 1:
"[C C]In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
There's a [F F]land that's fair and [C C]bright,
Where the [F F]handouts grow on [C C]bushes,
And you [F F]sleep out every [G7 G7]night,
Where the [C C]boxcars all are empty,
And the [F F]sun shines every [C C]day,
On the [F F]birds and the [C C]bees
And the [F F]cigarette [C C]trees,
The [F F]lemonade [C C]springs
Where the [F F]bluebird [C C]sings,
In the [G7 G7]Big Rock Candy [C C]Mountains."
Verse 2:
"[C C]In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the [F F]cops have wooden [C C]legs,
And the [F F]bulldogs all have [C C]rubber teeth,
And the [F F]hens lay soft boiled [G7 G7]eggs.
The [C C]farmers' trees are full of fruit
And the [F F]barns are full of [C C]hay.
Oh, I'm [F F]bound to [C C]go
Where there [F F]ain't no [C C]snow,
Where the [F F]rain don't [C C]fall
And the [F F]wind don't [C C]blow,
In the [G7 G7]Big Rock Candy [C C]Mountains."
Verse 3:
"[C C]In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
You [F F]never change your [C C]socks,
And the [F F]little streams of [C C]alcohol
Come a-[F F]tricklin' down the [G7 G7]rocks,
The [C C]brakemen have to tip their hats
And the [F F]railroad bulls are [C C]blind.
There's a [F F]lake of [C C]stew,
And of [F F]whiskey [C C]too,
You can [F F]paddle all a[C C]round 'em
In a [F F]big ca[C C]noe,
In the [G7 G7]Big Rock Candy [C C]Mountains."
Verse 4:
"[C C]In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
The [F F]jails are made of [C C]tin,
And [F F]you can walk right [C C]out again,
As [F F]soon as you are [G7 G7]in.
There [C C]ain't no short-handled shovels,
No [F F]axes, saws, or [C C]picks,
I'm a-[F F]going to [C C]stay,
Where you [F F]sleep all [C C]day,
Where they [F F]hung the [C C]jerk,
Who in[F F]vented [C C]work,
I'll [F F]see you [C C]all
This [F F]coming [C C]fall,
In the [G7 G7]Big Rock Candy [C C]Mountains."

About this song: Big Rock Candy Mountain

"Big Rock Candy Mountain" is a song about a hobo's idea of paradise - a modern version of the medieval concept of Cockaigne, and similar to the cavalryman's concept of Fiddler's Green. The song describes a hobo's vision of utopia, a place where the "hens lay soft boiled eggs" and there are "cigarette trees". The song is also rather ironic and satirical in that it additionally describes modified versions of things that one wouldn't think should exist in paradise at all, such as police (with wooden legs) and jails (made of tin)...
