TUTORIAL
So, playing this version of these two songs the way Tyler does in the livestream is a bit tricky, so I recommend watching and practicing along the livestream clip. But if you don't want to, feel free to play it as you feel like.
First of all, he is using fingerpicking, but it's very easy to learn because he makes the same two repeated movements during all the song, which are: First, picking the two bottom side strings (E and A) with the index and middle fingers at the same time, the second movement is picking the second string (C) with the thumb, and that's it, you don't even need the remaining string, so when you play the chords, you can skip those notes if you prefer (that's what I do).
Now that you know how the fingerpicking works let's move to the actual song, but I'm not gonna guide you through the integrity of it, because some parts are pretty straight forward, instead I'll be focusing on the difficult parts or the things worth mentioning to play it better or the way Tyler does.
So at the very beginning of the song there is a thing Tyler does to add flavor to the first chords. In the first two loops, instead of doing a straight F, Tyler starts with an A and adds the finger to play the full F (this is called a hammer on) instead of playing the thumb string in the fingerpicking pattern. It would read like this:
F Dm A
A|-0---0---0---0---0---0---0---0----------|
E|-0^1-1---1---1---0---0---0---0----------|
C|-------0---2---2---1---1---1---1--------|
G|----------------------------------------|
You only have to do this in the first two loops before the singing starts, then you can start doing the normal fingerpicking.
The next thing that Tyler does in the song that's worth mentioning is the way he plays the C chord. So for this chord he uses an alternative version of it, and the way of playing it is ¨5433¨, so if you noticed, the position of the fingers is the same that in the Bb chord but moved two frets higher. If you don't like the sound of it or you found it difficult to play, don't worry, you can play the standard chord and it'll sound good as well.
Ok, we are almost finished. So, other thing worth mentioning out is the transition from Heathens to Trees (that's the ¨la la la¨ part). This is one of the most difficult parts of the song because in the live he skips some parts of the lines or even an entire line (I've tried to make it as clear as possible on the tab) while he speeds up the rhythm of the song to play the Trees part faster. So, if you can play this part with this few instructions that I've given you, perfect, but if you can't, I recommend you again to go watch the live clip and try to play along with it, that way it'll be easier for you.
Last but not least, we have to finish properly the song. For the last chord, which is an F, play it stumming down all strings. And that's it, you've mastered this song the way Tyler plays it. So thank you for reading and I hope this was helpful. Happy playing!!!
