G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
Night swimming
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
deserves a quiet night.

G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
The photograph on the dashboard,
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
taken years ago,
C9 chordC9 D chordD
turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
Every streetlight reveals
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
the picture in reverse.
C9 chordC9 D chordD
Still it's so much clearer.
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
I forgot my shirt at the
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
water's edge. The moon is low
C9 chordC9 D chordD
tonight.

Intro: x1

G chordG C9 chordC9
G chordG D chordD

G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
Night swimming
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
deserves a quiet night. I'm
C9 chordC9 D chordD
not sure all these people under-
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
stand. It's not like years
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
ago. The fear of getting
C9 chordC9 D chordD
caught, of recklessness and
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
water. They cannot see me
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
naked. These things they go
C9 chordC9 D chordD
away, replaced by every

G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
day. Night swimming
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
remembering that night.
C9 chordC9 D chordD
September's coming soon. I'm
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
pining for the moon. And
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
what if there were two. side by
C9 chordC9 D chordD
side in orbit around the fairest
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
sun? That bright, tight
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
forever drum cannot describe night
C9 chordC9 D chordD
swimming.

G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
You, I thought I knew you.
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
You, I cannot judge.
C9 chordC9 D chordD
You, I thought you knew me. This one's
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
laughing quietly under-
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
neath my breath. Night
C9 chordC9 D chordD
swimming.

Interlude:

G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
The photograph reflects every
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
streetlight a reminder. Night
C9 chordC9 D chordD
swimming deserves a quiet
G chordG C9 chordC9 D chordD
night.
G chordG C9 chordC9 A9 chordA9
deserves a quiet
C9 chordC9 D chordD
night.

About this song: Nightswimming

Track 11 of 12 on the album Automatic For The People. In the liner notes of 'In Time: The Best of R.E.M.' (2003) guitarist Peter Buck says that this is the only R.E.M. song where the lyrics came before the music. Lead singer Michael Stipe told Buck & bassist/ keyboardist Mike Mills he had written a full set of lyrics & maybe they could find some suitable music. When the band returned to the studio, Mills played a piece on the piano which fit Stipe's lyrics perfectly. Read more on Last.fm.
