G D
GD
I took this walk to ease my mind

To find out what's gnawing at me
C
Wouldn't think to look at me,

that I've spent a lot of time in education
C
It all seems so long ago
G D
I'm a thinker, not a talker
C
I've no-one to talk to, anyway
GF
I can't see the road
C G
for the rain in my eyes
G F C G
Ahhh ...
D
I live above the grocers store,
Am
owned by an Austrian
C
He often calls me down to eat
GD
And he jokes about his broken English,
C
tries to be a friend to me
GD
But for all my years of reading conversation,
C
I stand without a word to say
GF
I can't see the bridge
C G
for the rain in my eyes
Ahhh...
(now it changes key, everything goes up 1 step)
A E
And the world is full of life
Bm
Full of folk who don't know me
D
And they walk in twos or threes or more
A E
While the light that shines above the grocer's store
D
Investigates my face so rudely
AE
And my essays lying scattered on the floor
D
Fulfill their needs just by being there
AE
And my hands shake, my head hurts,
D A
my voice sticks inside my throat
A E
I'm invisible and dumb,
D A
And no-one will recall me
A G
And I can't see the water
C Am7EA
for the tears in my ey-y-yes

About this song: Conversation Piece
"Conversation Piece" was the b-side to the original 1970 version of "The Prettiest Star" (which featured Marc Bolan on lead guitar) and came out inbetween his second (eponymous) album (aka "Man of Words/Man of Music", or Space Oddity) and "The Man Who Sold The World". Bowie recorded a new version for his unreleased 2001 album "Toy", which later found release on the bonus disc of Heathen.
