[Intro]
Am Am, C/B C/B, C/G C/G, C/B C/B

[Verse]
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G
Stop asking musicians what they think
C/B C/B Am Am
He said softly as he poured himself a second drink
C/B C/B C/G C/G C/B C/B
And outside, the world slipped over the brink
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G
We all thought we had nothing to lose
C/B C/B
That we could trust in crossed fingers and horseshoes
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G
That everything would work out, no matter what we choose

[Pre-Chorus]
G G C/G C/G F F
The first time it was a tragedy, the second time was a farce
G G C/G C/G F F
Outside it's nineteen-thirtythree so I'm hitting the bar

[Chorus]
C/G C/G G G
But I don't know what's going on anymore
Am Am
The world outside is burning with a brand new light
F F
But it isn't one that makes me feel warm
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn

Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn

[Verse]
Am Am C/B C/B
If I was from the greatest generation I'd be pissed
C/G C/G C/B C/B
Surveying the world slipping back to this
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G C/B C/B
I'd be screaming at my grand kids: "We already did this"
Am Am C/B C/B
Be suspicious of simple answers
C/G C/G C/B C/B
That shit's for fascists and maybe teenagers
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G
You can't fix the world if all you have is a hammer

[Pre-Chorus]
G G C/G C/G F F
The first time it was a tragedy, the second time was a farce
G G C/G C/G F F
Outside it's nineteen-thirtythree so I'm hitting the bar

[Chorus]
C/G C/G G G
But I don't know what's going on anymore
Am Am
The world outside is burning with a brand new light
F F
But it isn't one that makes me feel warm
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G C/B C/B
For the daaaaaawwwwwwwn

[Instrumental Break]
Am Am C/B C/B C/G C/G

[Bridge]
G G C C
Aren't you ashamed of this?
F F
I surely hope that you are
G G C C F F
We live in a society that's maybe heading for Mars
G G C C F F
But down here we still have a shower of bastards taking charge
G G C C F F
Outside it's nineteen-thirtythree so I'm hitting the bar

[Chorus]
N.C. G G
But I don't know what's going on anymore

The world outside is burning with a brand new light
F F
But it isn't one that makes me feel warm
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn
G G C C F F
Don't go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn

About this song: 1933

"Stylistically, I wanted the album to be episodic, by which I mean, I wanted each song to follow its own path as far as it goes. So this probably isn't the 'punkest' record I've made, but this song is one of the most musically aggressive songs of my solo career, which I like. Lyrically, it's about disappointment and disgust with our political class as a whole; in particular, it's about the fact that we should treat any movement that promises national renewal with extreme suspicion. That shit tends not to end well, for anyone."Read more on Last.fm.
